Swimming offers more to disabled people than almost any other activity. It provides freedom, fun and a challenge, which is so often denied to those who are unable to move freely. Swimming amongst disabled is becomming increasingly popular and of immense value.
The Seahorse swimming club was formed in 1956, when members of the Crewe Baths Committee gave Seahorse exclusive rights and sole use of the simming baths on Thursday evenings. This partnership has continued to the the present day, with the Borough Council Mayor being the Club President.
The Seahorse club is affiliated to the Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy. This is an organisation, which develops the teaching of swimming to people with disabilites. For over half a century people with disabilities have been experiencing freedom in water learning through using the Halliwich concept. www.halliwick.org.uk
The club caters for a wide varity of disabilities and all ages and the swimming ability of our membrs is mixed, but most of our swimming members achieve a great deal in the water, whether it's simmining 5 metres or representing their country at swimming.
Seahorse relies on volunteer helpers to run the club, as most swimmers require one to one help in the pool. The helpers will have to undertake a Criminal Record Bureau check.
The club relies on donations and fundraising activities to keep it afloat. Members and helpers are offered days out and parties on special occasions such as Chrismas.
