Westend Listeners - We’re here to listen.
The World seems to get more hectic every day. More things to do,
more people to see, more information to absorb and deal with. We
hear a lot: from the television, the radio, our friends, our relatives,
our neighbours. Many of us would say we hear too much ….
but do we really listen?
We all need to be listened to at times. Westend Listeners is a
group of volunteers who will set aside time to listen to you. They
are there to listen, not to judge, not to give advice and not to
gossip. They are there to give people time and space to talk to
someone who cares.
Janet Wenlock, a founder and Listener, described her own experience:
When my
Mum died of cancer just 6 weeks after my first baby was born,
I was devastated. People offered much love and practical support
but nothing they could do or say could take the pain away. It
was so helpful to talk to someone who just listened and let me
pour out all my feelings. It helped me find my own way through
the grief
Westend Listeners have listened to people with:
- relationship difficulties
- depression
- bereavement
- coping with single parenthood
- domestic
violence and
- loneliness
Listeners are not counsellors and don’t
offer advice; they are simply there to listen.
They emphasised:
It doesn’t
need to be a 'big' problem. If
you need to talk, we’re here to listen
Both listening
and being listened to helps you see problems in an entirely different
light.
Everybody at Westend Listeners has been trained by Acorn Christian
Listeners so that they are properly equipped to offer people an
opportunity to share concerns. Listening is free of charge and
open to anyone over the age of 16, irrespective of race, faith
or gender.
Westend Listeners are a part of Crewe & Nantwich
District Listening Ear (CANDLE) and are planning to start another
listening
group in Nantwich this Summer. They are always on the lookout for
volunteers who are interested in listening, who will be provided
with training.
Westend Listeners have recently moved to Hightown Methodist Church,
on the corner of Hightown and Browning Street. There is a “drop
in” meeting every Thursday morning and a crèche available.
Or you can phone them on 01270 250629 and leave a message.
They will then get back to you to make an appointment at a more
convenient time.
