Throughout the summer I have written about many community and
voluntary organisations in Crewe and Nantwich. This week, I want
to tell you about one that I’m personally involved with -
Radio Leighton
I volunteer for South Cheshire Hospital Broadcast Service.

It is based at Leighton Hospital where radio shows are broadcast
every weekday between 6pm and 9.30pm. We provide something
local and live for the patients to listen to when the visitors have
gone home. There are a variety of shows that are broadcast from
the studio to the patients such as, children’s programs, presenters
choice and the one which I do; request shows.
The request show is about going to as many wards as we can in
the hospital to visit the patients and to talk to them. I find
this experience very rewarding because you are giving the patients
a new face to see and somebody new to talk to. I then take patients’ requests,
which will be played later that night. I find that this is a more
personal way of doing a show; when I announce the song I know who
it’s for as I had met them earlier and they know who I am.
Volunteers are of different ages, cultures and backgrounds. Some
work for the broadcasting service as a hobby; some, like me, work
there to gain experiences. Everyone does it for the enjoyment of
being able to help. I have found volunteering at the South
Cheshire Hospital Broadcast Service to be thoroughly enjoyable
as I have been able to meet new people. All of the volunteers I
have met are friendly and supportive and I have enjoyed working
alongside them as a team.
I
have also been able to try my hand at both the technical and the
presenting sides of the show. This has allowed me to gain new skills
and to gain in confidence. I have also found volunteering at the
South Cheshire Hospital Broadcast Service allows me to be able to
do something good for someone else; whether it be playing their
favourite song or just talking to them.
To be a volunteer at the Leighton Hospital studio you need to
be dedicated and have a long-term commitment. You don’t need
any experience, as your qualities will be assessed so that you
are placed accordingly in an area of work. You just need to be
willing to help other people.
